 Post subject: Download only if new?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:20 am
Hello,

I'm using FDM for the first time. Before I only used the browser's own download manager.

I'd like to know if it's possible to configure FDM for the following:

1. Download files for the first time;
2. Once 1. is complete, then the next time, when redownloading the same files, FDM creates a backup of the previously downloaded files, by renaming them to something like somefile.txt.fdm;

3. Once 2. is complete, then it checks the URL status;
3.3.1. If the URL status is OK, then it downloads the file;
3.3.2. If the URL status is not OK, then it renames the somefile.txt.fdm back to somefile.txt;

4. FDM should only download the new file, if there's a new version of the file in the server; otherwise it should keep the previously downloaded file.

Is it possible to configure it this way? If not, would you be willing to implement this in a future version?

Thank you

Sorry for asking again so soon, but doesn't anyone have any idea if such can be done? I still couldn't find a way. :(

There is no way to know for sure if a file is different without downoading it or its hash. Even if you can check that file sizes and time stamps are unchanged, this info may be unuseful, when new files are available with different names or in diffferent locations.

But, it's still usefull if the files aren't renamed or in different locations. Which by the way, the download would fail anyway. So, I don't see your explanation a reason not to support this functionality.
