Download to "Downloads" Folder in Windows 7/Vista

Postby Arbitrator » Sat Dec 31, 2011 7:21 am

In 7 and Vista, an official downloads folder exists by default for each user:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\

Additionally, for music and video, the following folders exist:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Music\
C:\Users\Public\Public Music\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Videos\
C:\Users\Public\Public Videos\

Currently, Free Download Manager downloads files into the root directory (i.e., C:\downloads\) with a specific folder based on the download type. Please use the official user folders instead.

Since the downloads are already "public" because they're currently being put in the root folder, which is accessible to all users, I suggested the "Public" user folders in addition to the private user folders.

Ideally, it would be nice to see something like one of the following as the default set of folders:

C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Music\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Other\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Software\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Videos\

C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Software\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Downloads\Free Download Manager\Other\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Music\Free Download Manager Downloads\
C:\Users\<User Name>\Videos\Free Download Manager Downloads\

C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Music\
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Other\
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Software\
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Videos\

C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Software\
C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\Free Download Manager\Other\
C:\Users\Public\Public Music\Free Download Manager Downloads\
C:\Users\Public\Public Videos\Free Download Manager Downloads\

Need better "save as" folder for use with Windows 7/Vista

Agreed for default settings, however, I usually want to set a specific download location and this causes a problem as FDM (sometimes) uses a dialogue box to select the folder which is not easy to use.

Actually FDM uses two different dialogue boxes - I've not managed to work out the rules for which one is used.

This screenshot illustrates the first one. The dialogue on the left (in the screenshot) suggests the default location correctly, and the dialogue on the right comes up when the choice is made to browse to a new folder. This dialogue box is the one I don't like as it does not allow for easy navigation (does not show libraries, etc) and, I can't use a program I usually use to quickly jump to a named folder.

The second screenshot shows the standard "save as" dialogue box which is the preferred one. Ideally this one should always be used. I can't understand why the first dialogue box would ever be used.
