Can you get FDM to download exe files from Chrome?

It works fine for me, it just doesn't monitor all types of downloads.

I think the reason that there are so many methods out there that different people claim work for them is the following:

1) Some of the people attempting this have Chrome 3.x, some have 4.x
2) Google Chrome 3.x places it's plugin directory in the user folder, Chrome 4.1x puts it in the programs (x86) folder.
3) However, if you had previously installed Chrome 3.x in Windows 7 x64 and then later upgraded (or chrome did it on it's own) to 4.x; I *think* it keeps everything in the user directory.

Ok, I finally figured out this BS. Why the maker of this program can't provide simple installation instructions for using FDM with Chrome in Windows 7 x64 I have NO idea. The proper folder is referenced indirectly in the registry - it should be a simple matter to pull that info to get the plugin location correct.
Hopefully anyone who comes to this thread from the forum search has the good sense to skip to the end of the thread - because if they are like me - they are just going to have their time wasted with the instructions provided previously.

Ok, first of all - this ONLY apllies to you if the following things apply to YOUR situation:

1) You have Windows 7 64 bit
2) You have Chrome 4.1x or newer (click on the wrench, "about google chrome")
3) You have this folder located in this specific location on your computer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\4.1.xxx.xxxx
4) You have the newest version of free download manager installed.

If all these things are not true, then one of the earlier specified solutions probably should work for you.

Instructions:

1) Open this page in Internet Explorer or Firefox instead of Chrome.
2) Open free download manager and go to the options menu, then settings, then Monitoring. Ensure that "Google Chrome" is unchecked. Yes, thats right - unchecked.
3) Close Chrome and free download manager.
4) Is free download manager really closed? There should not be a icon for it in the notification area in the bottom right part of your screen. If there is, right click on it and select exit.
5) Go to this folder on your computer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Free Download Manager
Right-click on npfdm.dll and select copy
6) Now go to this folder on your computer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\4.1.xxx.xxxx
(the "x's" represent your specific version of chrome)
7) Right-click in a empty area of this folder on the right side and select paste.
Say it is OK if it asks for admin permission.
8 ) Find the free download manager icon on your desktop or start menu. DON'T CLICK ON IT YET
Now, right-click on it and select "run as administrator"
Say yes to the admin prompt if it comes up.
9) Go to the options menu, then settings, then Monitoring. Put a check in the Google Chrome box.
10) Hit "OK" and you will get that horsesh*t saying "Can't find the blah blah blah"
(note to the programmer - it's called the registry - have fdm pull this information out of there. Don't rely on a static file location. That is how you f*ck people over).
11) Click on yes. Now in the window that comes up, navigate to:
computer - local disk c (or whatever other drive you foolishly decided to install windows 7) - Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\4.1.xxx.xxxx
There may be more than one folder that fits that description. Pick the one with the largest number. The other one(s) are for previous versions of Chrome.
Hit ok.
12) Close FDM. Really close it (remember the notification area)
13) Open chrome and in the address window, type in about:plugins and hit enter.

Somewhere in there you should see multiple references to free download manager. It will be obvious.
If you don't see that, then one of the following are true:

1) You missed a step, start over from scratch.
2) These instructions do not apply to you because your configuration is different
3) Google has presumptively changed the default location for their plugin again
4) I'm insane and get my jollies by walking strangers through seemingly useful but ultimately useless procedures.

All I can say is that this works for me.

After the "npfdm.dll" file is placed into the proper plugin directory for Chrome, (5.0.375.17) an error is generated when the download is handed off to FDM via the DLL.

Do you know when this issue will be fixed? I like FDM, and it's depressing that it can't be used with Chrome.

What version of FDM? What OS? What error do you get? On what download (URL) exactly?
I've just tested FDM 3.4.902 on 5.0.342 version of Chrome - works fine.

I followed the above instructions from zilla1126.
I am running Vista, FDM 3.0 Build 852, Chrome 5.0.370.70 Beta.

Since chrome was installed to my user profile I copied the npfdm.dll file to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\

When I view about:plugins from chrome I find:
Free Download Manager Click Catcher Plug-In for Netscape, Opera, Mozilla - Version: 1.1.2
Location: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\plugins\npfdm.dll

I set the chrome plugin path in FDM to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\

The npfdm.dll file appears both where I put it (C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\) and where Chrome thinks it is (C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\plugins\)

If I have time I will try FDM 3.4 and see if that makes anything better.

Problem: I'm unable to download Youtube Downloader installer with FDM. Actually, I can't download any files cnet.download.com with FDM. Downloads from certain sites are intercepted wheres others aren't.

Nice post zilla. But following those instructions exactly didn't work for my setup.

When choosing the directory to put the npfdm.dll file in, so that DLM and Chrome both see it, I had three "Plugin" directories to choose from.

One C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Plugins
Two C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins
Three C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\5.0.375.70\Plugins

Confusing yeah? The only directory that showed the npfdm.dll plugin in Chrome (by checking about:plugin) was option TWO.

Once npfdm.dll is in that directory I followed the instructions fine.

N.B. I also pasted the npfdm.dll file into option one, but I'm too scared to delete it to validate my theory as FDM is finally working.

Is there a way to change the directory folder after you've already set a folder before?
I've accidentally chose the wrong folder for plugin directory and I wonder if there's a way to change it again.

It doesn't prompt me anymore when I tick the Google Chrome box in Monitoring settings.

The value is in the windows registry, open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FreeDownloadManager.ORG\Free Download Manager\Settings\Monitor\

Modify the ChromePDI value in there.

Instead of pointing FDM to chrome plugin folder, just point it to the install directory of FDM.
Restart both Chrome and FDM - Voila! It works!

1- Create folder
C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins

2- Run FDM AS AN ADMINISTRATOR

3- Go to Settings>Monitoring>check Google Chrome

4- Browse to the folder you Created in step 1.

That should do it.
