If you have ever tried to create an IBM AIX System Management Interface Tool (Smit) Style menu by hand you probably found that simple text editors just aren't enough.
There are multiple dependencies and a number of Stanza objects like sm_menu_opt, sm_name_hdr, sm_cmd_opt and sm_cmd_hdr.
Also there are a variety of syntax regulations that make it very hard to keep it all in sync.
Editing an existing smitty dump is even more difficult as the file can be rather big.
This is where WinSmit can help. It aims to provide a graphical view of the menu and lets you choose what menus to edit.
WinSmit provides a relatively simple way to import, create and export smitty style menus that can be compiled on AIX to provide your own Smitty menu.
Limitations and prerequisites
WinSmit lets you edit the menus but does not check if the data entered is correct.
You need to know what you are doing in order to create functioning AIX menus. There is plenty of IBM documentation available and I suggest you read and familiarize yourself before compiling your new menus on AIX . Please see the links page to find IBM documentation on the ODM database objects and the smitty tool.
