Editor review of PhotoZoom Pro 2 2006-08-30

When you need to enlarge a picture, you can't help the photo becoming blurry and pixels starting to show up. There have been developed several photo enlargement methods (including Bicubic provided in PhotoShop, Mitchell, B-Spline etc). PhotoZoom Pro goes further by offering the new S-Spline XL interpolation algorithm that surpasses existing methods in quality. Though the developers claim that enlargement performed with the new algorithm involves no quality loss, my general impression is that the quality loss cannot be avoided altogether. The general tendency is as follows: the higher quality the original image is, the smoother result you will get. The software is very useful when you need to make a large print from a digital photo whose original size is not enough for doing so.

The new program version contains convenient selection and crop tool, so you can open an image, select and crop any part of it and magnify this part only. Enlarged images can be saved in TIFF, PNG, JPEG, BMP and TGA. However, when saving images as JPEG the program doesn't let you specify desired image quality, therefore saved images turn out relatively heavy.

It is also worth mentioning that the software is localized into almost twenty languages. I looked through the Russian translation; unfortunately enough, it does not seem too accurate, besides, not all of the options are translated.

The program is shareware, with the unregistered version leaving watermarks on your images.
