Editor review of Fony |
2007-06-25 |
Fony is a no-frills utility for font editing that features all the basic options to match this aim.
The software works with fonts that can be imported from among installed TrueType, Amiga Bitmap, BDF and Bitmap Font writer fonts. The font to be altered is displayed in a smaller checked window with the whole row of symbols shown underneath. Fony provides you with a couple of handy options to edit a symbol: draw freehand, draw lines and flood fill. Moreover, there are some advanced options available – for instance, you can determine the height of pixels, resolution, internal leading, default char, word-break char, etc.
A definite drawback of the software is the lack of in-program help: there is no help file, nor does the program offer a functioning link to its website. This can cause hardly any inconvenience for seasoned users, but it may put off some novices. To add to this, the glyph editor window, being disproportional, makes it difficult to achieve desirable proportions in glyphs.
Overall, the program does not differ much from its competitors and has impressed us neither by its functionality, nor by convenience. Yet it showed a stable performance throughout the testing and deserves the points given below. |
