Dear all! We have released Free Download Manager 2.5. FDM is now released under GNU General Public License!
Of course, this is not the only thing you can rejoice at, as FDM 2.5 opens up new opportunities for its loyal users, as well as for those who are just about to join the FDM community.

Well, this version still does not support FTP downloads together with “Get Proxy Settings from Microsoft Internet Explorer”. It tries to contact FTP server directly even when autoproxy configuration says go via (HTTP) proxy.
Cygwin istaller works in the same configuration so it *is* possible.

But as you added support of bittorrent you should also add ability to select which files to download and which to ignore from those that torrent file links to (like BitComet). With that function FDM will have all I need.

Among download managers, free or not, I think this one is the best! Even though I haven’t tried the latest version (2.5) yet, I have used the previous versions and love them! I love it because it’s totally free and doesn’t require registration, unlike some “free” download managers I’ve seen.

well… this is a very good download manager… i like it 90% though… something is missing… e.g graphical progress (maybe in background of active download window will be great), animated task bar icon (its more eye catching when its move), dsc file not informative enough (needs more detail), slider for bandwidth 1-100% + auto (better than just 3 option speed + auto), custom toolbar, rename while downloading, etc..

Free Download Manager is great! Did anybody a compilation for Mac OS X? For PC’s are several download managers available. But none for OS X as Open Source free. Because I’m not using a Mac I can’t do that. And my friends with Mac’s don’t have the knowledge how to compile a source or even not a compiler.

Well, forgot to say one thing, I used to use flashget, which, recently, I discovered that it is mainly a spyware application since there are a lot of reports of suspicious behaviors and activities while connecting to the net without really using the Internet. I used flashget mainly for torrent download as I can see that it is more efficient (for me) in this than utorrent or other BitTorrent applications. I will use FDM now, without worrying that someone is spying on my me or my computers. Thanks again.

I guess I’m a little behind the times. For a year I have been using FDM V2.1 on a daily basis, and was so delighted with the software I never thought to look for any updates until today. The FDM team has created a “Best of Breed” package, and I thank you all deeply for your efforts and continued development as evidenced by this latest release.
Excellent stability and error checking, highly polished interface, options galore; what more can one ask for? And it’s free?!!

i m a system adminstrator and today i can see in server log
90056 downloads of the same file with FDM 2.x user agent.. GREAT !
i have to drop ip manually to stop this downloader

What version do you use? If it’s version 2.1, then there can really be such a bug there. But it has been fixed in later versions.

This is such an awesome program, especially with the inclusion of Bittorrent and Flash Video downloading support. (It’s nice to have Bittorrent on it, but i still stick with BitComet for reasons not related to performance. (seeding torrents with it on my 500 MHz system running 24/7 O.O )
But still, This IS the undisputed ‘best download manager’ program to be found. Sure, it has some flaws (for some people anyway, and i myself havent found any), but it is better that the trialware commonly found elsewhere. Me wonders if the ‘others’ havent reverse-engineered it yet.
Had some issue with Youtube videos earlier, but a reinstall fixed that. If support can be expanded to downloading flash videos from any URL, it’d be nice (although it can be expected that this can’t really be implemented for technical reasons)

Simply the best Download Manager…i’ve been using FDM since the later version of 2.1….and i’ve been downloading almost 20 GB using 56K connection…..you guys should be awarded for making such a free but EXCELLENT program and become an example for any other programmers…..keep it up….salut!!!!

DEAR Admin, please pay great attention to what i am posting:
The program doesn’t work with the free account of RAPID SHARE, even though it gets the name of the file and its format as well, but it does not download the actual file instead only a small part of the file is downloaded. eg if i download real player 11 from rapid share on a free account, whose size is 13.2 mb the manager will only download a few kilobytes only, this is an very importan problem please have a good look at it.you can try it out yourself and see the result, i hope you will get the problem solved as soon as possible. thanks!

I can’t download videos from video-sharing sites other than YouTube…. and I can’t download videos flagged ‘adult content’. So, my use for FMD is basically reduced to downloading general content YouTube videos.
I’ve e-mailed technical support numerous times starting over a month ago, and I still have to reicieve any kind of helpful information.

I have been using about four year. there is no comercial or noncomercial download manager that can compete with this FDM. If you put the FDM in heavy mode it become extreme sucker to use ultimate available speed. So you are the best Guys to make such great things !!!!!!!!!!!!!
